A couple of weeks earlier I had the privilege of meeting and photographing the Irulas of TN, master snake catchers, while #onassignment for the BBC with editor/writer Soutik Biswas.
Vedan(above), has been catching and handling India's four most poisonous snakes for decades like his father before him. He has even sacrificed a finger to his reptilian cohorts. Notice the completely serene expression on his face as he holds a King cobra by its tail, that unmistakable hood dancing inches away from him. Each of the clay pots that surround him houses atleast one snake. With a few more slithering around in the pit for good measure. Just another day at the precipice for nine-fingered Vedan. (Link for full story about the Co-op of snake catchers in Tamil Nadu and the two Irulas who were summoned to help fix Florida's Python menace in bio)

@Regrann from @natgeo - Photo @ladzinski / A little planning and a lot of luck go hand in hand. Dawn patrol at #leschesery is predictably beautiful, even more so when the locals show up. As this baby #Chamois appeared over the small outcropping my face lit up with a smile echoed by the sound of my camera shutter! The moment was fleeting before the chamois disappeared behind the rocks again, grateful to have witnessed it. Photographed #onassignment for @natgeotravel #GR5 - #regrann

Total Solar Eclipse, Uganda. Celebrating African ingenuity, resourcefulness and curiosity. Photograph by @tariqzaidiphoto.
On Sunday, November 3, 2013 the moon’s shadow swept across the Earth passing over equatorial Gabon in Western Africa, Congo, Uganda, Kenya and finally Ethiopia creating a total eclipse of the sun. Total solar eclipses are rare at any particular location because totality exists only along a narrow path on the Earth's surface traced by the Moon's umbra. One of the best places to observe the total solar eclipse (where you see a diamond ring effect) was in Uganda. This image is a part of a larger series of images taken on the streets of Uganda, on Sunday, November 3, 2013. Most people will only be lucky enough to see this event once in their lifetime.

West Indian Manatees - a mother and her calf - float above a seagrass bed off the coast of Belize, in Central America. Manatees in this region are less acclimated to humans than those in Florida and thus tend to be more elusive. Despite their hesitancy, this pair allowed me into their world early one morning.

These “sea cows” communicate with one another through touch, as well as through patterns of squeaks and squeals. Such signals allow a mother to recognize her calf, and thus to teach the calf necessary survival skills early in life. Manatees are threatened in the wild by both boat strikes and the loss of warm water springs due to climate change.
To learn more about these beautiful creatures, and to see more underwater photography, follow me, @BrianSkerry, on Instagram.

On this day last year we drove across the Shire River Valley to document agricultural projects for @catholicreliefservices - The drought in Chikwawa District had devastating effects on maize and cattle, pushing many into desperate circumstances. As we crossed the valley in scorching heat, a distant storm teased us with an enormous anvil so large I couldn't fit it in the frame. Some predict this once fertile flood plain could turn to desert in our lifetime. Today I'm feeling extra thankful for fresh water, and fearful for the future of this planet.
